A manuscript critique is an analysis of your manuscript. It provides insightful feedback on what’s working and what isn’t, but it doesn’t offer solutions on how to fix the issues. It also doesn’t include in-line comments. Think of a manuscript critique like a simple diagnosis but without the treatment.
A developmental edit is like an open-heart surgery for your manuscript. Not only does it highlight what works and what doesn’t, but in each case, I will provide suggestions on how to improve what’s already working and how to fix what isn’t. The editorial report for a developmental edit is much more detailed, and the edit includes in-line comments on the manuscript itself.
Manuscript critiques and developmental edits don’t include copyediting and proofreading, because the aim of MCs and DEs is to nail the structure and the content of your manuscript, not to fix the spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
I only edit finished manuscripts. If your manuscript isn’t quite ready yet or you’re feeling stuck writing it, book coaching might be a better fit for you at this stage of your writing. That being said, booking an edit ahead of time is always wise if you want to make sure that your manuscript can be edited right after finishing it.
